OTD | England fell to their biggest ODI defeat - in terms of runs - when they lost by 219 to Sri Lanka in 2018

The year is 2018 and this is the moment England faced their biggest defeats in terms of runs against Sri Lanka in Colombo losing by a huge margin of 219 runs. One of the most embarrassing moments for England Cricket. One of the heaviest defeats in ODI Cricket against a struggling Sri Lankan side who got the better of them at their home and were good enough to beat the Barmy Army on this day of 23rd October.

The Sri Lanka vs England ODI series was another one-sided series where the England team got the better of Sri Lanka on their home ground. After a rained-out 1st ODI, England went on to win the next 3 matches and won the entire series. However, when all of us thought it was going to be a whitewash, the last and final ODI caught the England team by surprise.

Lankans steamroll England in Colombo

Though England had won the series it would have given them a lot of confidence if they whitewashed the Sri Lankans at their home ground, but it turns out the Island nation had other ideas. The onslaught started from the first innings itself with the Sri Lankan top 4 playing blistering knocks and taking the total to 366 in the end. This was one of the best displays of batting we got to see from Sri Lanka, especially in this series.

It all now depended on the powerful England batting lineup but unfortunately, even they failed to live up to the standards with only Ben Stokes with a 50+ score. The England score was at 132-9 with the pace of Chameera and the guile of Dananjaya causing a lot of trouble for the batters. In the end, it was the rain which came to save England out of their misery as they survived getting bowled out, but in the end, this was still one of the biggest defeats they have ever faced losing by 219 runs by DL method.
