OTD | South Africa’s limited-over opener Reeza Hendricks was born in 1989

Reeza Hendricks, now renowned as one of South Africa’s most reliable limited-overs openers, has carved out a distinguished career in both domestic and international cricket. As we celebrate his birthday today, it’s a fitting moment to reflect on the journey of this prolific right-handed batsman.

Hendricks began his cricketing journey in domestic circuits, representing teams like the Highveld Lions, Eagles, and Knights. His consistency and dedication soon saw him being recognized as one of South Africa’s promising talents. Notably, his versatility extends beyond batting; Hendricks can also bowl part-time spin, making him a valuable all-round contributor.

Domestic Career

His domestic achievements are nothing short of remarkable. In November 2017, during the Ram Slam T20 Challenge, Hendricks etched his name in the history books by scoring his first T20 century. His performance was the highlight of the tournament, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer with 361 runs in just eight matches. 

This feat was further complemented by his achievement in January 2018, where he became the first player to score a century in all three franchise competitions in South Africa within a single season. This remarkable consistency eventually earned him a spot in the Highveld Lions squad for the 2018–19 season and later, in the Jozi Stars for the inaugural Mzansi Super League T20 tournament.

How did Reeza Hendricks shine on the international stage?

Hendricks’ international career is equally impressive. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut against Australia on November 5, 2014. Since then, he has been a vital part of South Africa’s T20I and One Day International (ODI) squads. 

Hendricks’ ODI debut on August 5, 2018, against Sri Lanka, was nothing short of spectacular. Scoring 102 off 89 balls, he became the third South African and the fourteenth player overall to score a century on his ODI debut. His 88-ball century remains the fastest by a South African on ODI debut.
