OTD | Arthur Shrewsbury became the first man to make 1000 runs in Test Cricket

The game of cricket has been a very long game where we have seen some great moments which involve some of the greatest cricketers in the World. It is always an honour to play international cricket and score runs for your side. However to achieve some milestones you need to perform consistently as well. Some milestones have to be created first for players to accomplish in the future.

The player we will be talking about is one of England’s old-time batting greats Arthur Shrewsbury who started his international career in 1881 and had come into the scene with some great performances in first-class cricket. With over 26000 runs in his 498 first-class games, it was evident that this great batter would go on to enter the international scene as well. This was the era where cricket was still in its initial phases but was still a great sport to be played with the colonial countries in the setup.

Shrewsbury’s and the journey to 1000 Test runs

This was the day when it was only red ball cricket that was the norm of the game and the world was introduced to another great batter in Arthur Shrewsbury who made his debut at the age of 25. The Nottinghamshire batter started scoring runs in international cricket and became the first man to reach 1000 Test runs on this auspicious day of 17th July. Shrewsbury played 23 Test matches and ended his career with 1227 runs at an average of 35.47. This was the first time we saw a batter score more than 1000 runs and from here the trend of 1000 run milestones had started.

By the time Shrewsbury went on to complete this feat, he had made the 1000-run milestone as a special occasion for a cricketer. This was the moment of greatness that has made him one of the most iconic figures in the game not only in England but all over the World. It is safe to say that it was Arthur Shrewsbury who is the reason that once the player reaches a 1000-run mark in cricket it is a special milestone which takes them forward in their career.
