OTD, 1991: Graham Gooch’s unforgettable 154 not out set England up for their first home victory over West Indies for 22 years

On this day, back in 1991, England star cricketer Graham Gooch guided his side to win the first Test match at Leeds against a strong West Indies side in over 22 years of cricket history. The star batter made an unbeaten 154 runs in the second inning, which guided the hosts to register the great win back on June 9, 1991.

Speaking about the game here, it was Windies skipper Viv Richards who had won the toss and invited hosts to bat first in the game. Notably, after being sent to bat first, the home team was bundled out for just 198 runs in the first inning of the game. Skipper Graham Gooch made 34 runs, while Mike Atherton and Graeme Hick made 2 and 6 runs, respectively. Following them, Allan Lamb made 11 runs, while Mark Ramprakash made 27. However, it was Robin Smith who hammered 54 runs to help his side post a decent total.

However, during the chase, the Windies were just able to pile up 173 runs before being bowled out in the game. Stra opening batter Phil Simmons made 38 runs, while Richie Richardson made 29 and Viv Richards made 73 runs. However, other batters just departed after scoring runs in the single digit.

Meanwhile, skipper Graham Gooch made an unbeaten 154 runs from 331 balls, including 18 fours, to help his side get the best start. Following him, Mark Ramprakash and Derek Pringle made 27 runs each, which allowed them to post 252 runs in the second inning of the game. Windies bowler Curtly Ambrose was the star of the game, as he picked up six wickets with an economy of 1.85, but he could not save his side from the defeat.

During the chase, the Windies were bundled out for 162 runs as Richie Richardson made 68 runs and wicketkeeper batter Jeff Dujon made 33 runs. All batters were departed early, which made them lose the game badly, while the Graham-led home team won the game by 115 runs.
