3 New Zealand players to watch out for in their clash against Afghanistan in T20 World Cup 2024

Learn about 3 New Zealand players to watch in their T20 World Cup 2024 clash against Afghanistan. New Zealand and Afghanistan are set to square off in the 14th match of the T20 World Cup 2024. The two Group C members will meet at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Saturday (June 8). New Zealand have yet to play a game in the tournament, while Afghanistan registered a comprehensive 125-run win over Uganda in their opening fixture.

Despite being favourites in all editions and featuring in several knockout stages, the Black Caps have yet to win a single title in the shortest format of the game. The Kane Williamson-led team has a strong presence of experienced campaigners in their ranks and looks balanced in all departments. As they aim to start their campaign on a positive note, we take a look at three players who could make a big impact in the upcoming match.

Here are three New Zealand players to watch out for in the match against Afghanistan:

3. Trent Boult

The pitch at the Providence Stadium has supported the bowlers well in the last three matches. New Zealand have a solid pace unit which will be spearheaded by Trent Boult. The left-arm pacer has made a habit of taking wickets in the first over. His initial spell with the new ball will be crucial for the team. Boult had a great campaign in IPL 2024 where he troubled the batters with his sheer pace and swing deliveries.

2. Ish Sodhi

The surface here has also helped the spinners and New Zealand will rely on their veteran spinner Ish Sodhi to shine. The leg-spinner has played 116 T20 matches to date and has taken 136 wickets at an economy of 8. Sodhi and all-rounder Mitchell Santner play a crucial role for New Zealand in the middle overs.

1. Devon Conway

In T20 cricket, an aggressive start is important for a batting side to gain an early advantage. New Zealand have an excellent opening pair in Finn Allen and Devon Conway to provide a strong powerplay. If Allen is a solid hitter, Conway is a mix of class and mass. The southpaw can play according to situations and needs.
He may start slow and then accelerate, which will help the team’s run rate go up in order. Conway had missed the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season due to injury. He will look to bounce back in style at the marquee event.
