Bangladesh men’s cricket team, led by Mominul Haque, left their country on Wednesday (December 8) to play a two-match Test series against New Zealand. After a week in quarantine, the team’s spin bowling coach Rangana Herath has contacted Covid-19.
In addition, 9 members of the team have been kept in isolation after coming in contact with a fellow passenger infected with Covid-19. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials confirmed the news.
The result of the Covid-19 test of a passenger on which the Bangladesh team went to New Zealand came positive. That is why Mominul Haque, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Yasir Ali, Fazle Mahmud, Team Director Khaled Mahmud Sujon, selector Abdur Razzak, and three other members of the support staff have been kept in isolation.
After a long flight, the Bangladesh team reached Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday morning. The seven-day quarantine started from that day. In the first two Covid-19 Tests, all the results of the Bangladesh team members were negative. However, Rangana Herath tested positive in the third Test.
The Bangladesh team management is now looking at what the New Zealand Ministry of Health has decided. However, the isolation time of Herath, who has been infected with Covid-19, may increase further. Also, nine people kept in isolation were not allowed to use the gym facility on Tuesday. If they get tested negative in the test again, they will be able to do gym with the rest of the team.
Pace bowling coach Ottis Gibson is also suffering from stomach problems. Bangladesh will play two Tests in this New Zealand tour. The first Test match will start on January 1 at Mount Maunganui, and the second Test will start on January 9 in Christchurch.
