OTD | England's first ODI World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan turns 37

Former World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan was born on September 10, 1986, in Dublin, Ireland. Today, the former left-hand batter celebrates his 37th birthday. He is known for batting in the pressure situations and also for good leadership skills. Morgan made his international debut at the age of 16 for the Iris team before he moved to play for England back in 2009. 

Morgan has led the Three Lions’ side in 126 ODIs and 72 T20s, out of which the t248 ODIs and 115 T20Is, where he has slammed 10,159 runs in the limited overs format. The 37-year-old has also played 16 matches in the longest format of the game, where he was able to score 700 runs. The former England skipper also played 23 ODIs for Ireland Cricket Team. 

Morgan made his debut for the England side during the side’s T20 World Cup opener against the Netherlands. He was a member of the England Cricket Team which won the T20 World Cup title back in 2010 under the leadership of England legend, Paul Collingwood. The English side went on to lift their maiden ODI World Cup title under Morgan in 2019. 

If we talk about the 37-year-old’s brilliant innings, it came during the New Zealand side came to England after the completion of the ODI World Cup 2015. In the fourth match of the ODI series, the English side was chasing a mammoth total of 350 runs, Morgan slammed an explosive knock of 113 runs for his side, which helped England to level the five-match series 2-2. 

Morgan was awarded the Player of the Match in the fourth ODI for his match-winning ton. In the five-match ODI series, he scored a total of 322 runs at an average of 64.40 and a strike rate of 124.81. If we talk about his 2019 ODI World Cup performance, he smashed  362 in 10 games at a strike rate of 116.63. The former middle-order batter is the only player to have two ODI hundreds while playing for two different nations, England and Ireland.
