Cricket Highlights, Feb 02: Super Smash 2025 (Final Match) – Canterbury Kings vs Central Stags

CANT vs CTS (Final Match) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the thrilling final of the Super Smash 2025, where CTS emerged victorious against CANT in Wellington on February 2, 2025. The Stags clinched the title with a commanding six-wicket win, successfully chasing down the 136-run target in just 17.2 overs, with 16 balls to spare. Canterbury Kings, after being put into bat, struggled to build momentum and managed 135/8 in their 20 overs.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, CANT had a difficult start as they lost early wickets, failing to establish a strong foundation. Mitchell Hay was the first to depart, falling for just 5 runs off 7 balls, caught by Jayden Lennox off Brett Randell’s bowling in the second over. Soon after, Matthew Boyle followed, scoring 2 runs off 4 balls, edging a catch to Will Young off Angus Schaw.

Opener Chad Bowes tried to stabilize the innings, but his struggle ended at 16 runs off 19 balls, as he was dismissed by Blair Tickner in the seventh over. At 39/3, Canterbury were in deep trouble and needed a partnership to build momentum.

The most significant contribution came from Daryl Mitchell, who anchored the innings with a well-constructed 46 off 38 balls, striking three fours and one six. His effort, combined with Captain Cole McConchie’s 27 off 29 balls, gave Canterbury a fighting chance. However, just as they looked set for a strong finish, McConchie was run out by Tom Bruce in the 16th over.

Canterbury’s lower order failed to provide the late flourish needed to push their total beyond 150. Henry Shipley (10 off 9) and Zakary Foulkes (7 off 5) couldn’t capitalize, while Matt Henry’s quick 12 off 6 balls, including a six, gave them some hope. Kyle Jamieson remained unbeaten on 4, as Canterbury managed only 135/8 in their 20 overs, with a run rate of 6.75.

The CTS bowlers executed their plans well, with Toby Findlay leading the attack, taking 3/29 in his 4 overs. Brett Randell chipped in with 2/27, while Blair Tickner and Angus Schaw picked up one wicket each.

Chasing 136 for victory, Central Stags had an early hiccup when Jack Boyle fell for 5 off 5 balls, bowled by Kyle Jamieson in the second over. However, Will Young and Dane Cleaver steadied the innings with a crucial 75-run partnership.

Canterbury fought back with the dismissal of Cleaver, caught by Matthew Boyle off Jamieson, and later, Will Young fell to O’Rourke at 97/3 in the 13th over. However, by then, the damage had already been done, and Central Stags needed only 39 runs from the last seven overs.

Despite defending a low total, Canterbury’s bowlers tried to put up a fight. Kyle Jamieson (2/24 in 4 overs) was the standout performer, removing both Boyle and Cleaver. Will O’Rourke and Henry Shipley picked up one wicket each, while Ish Sodhi (0/22 in 4 overs) was economical but failed to break partnerships.

In the end, Central Stags’ well-structured chase and solid contributions from their batters ensured a dominant victory, making them the Super Smash 2025 champions.
