Off-spinner Washington Sundar provided the massive breakthrough of Ben Stokes moments before Lunch was going to be called on Day 5 of the second Test of the ongoing five-match series between England and India. Stokes trudged back quite disappointed to the dressing room for 33 off 73 deliveries, as the Indians were all smiles while going back to the dugout for the interval.

The spin-bowling all-rounder was right on target with the third delivery of what was just his second over of the fourth innings. Sundar got some lovely drift on the ball which went on with its angle, contrary to what Stokes felt the ball would go after pitching. The ball hit the pad first before getting deflected onto the pad. Stokes’ DRS turned out to be unsuccessful in the end, as he gave a surprised reaction after the umpire confirmed his dismissal.

Stokes was the sixth wicket to fall for the hosts. India had already picked up two more wickets barring that Stokes in the morning session; Ollie Pope (24 off 50) and Harry Brook (23 off 31). Both of those dismissals were courtesy of some accurate piece of bowling by Akash Deep, who had snapped four of England’s first five wickets in their second innings.

England, who were set a 608-run target in the final session of Day 4, had already lost Ben Duckett (25 off 15) and Zak Crawley (0 off 7), and Joe Root (6 off 16) on the fourth day before the umpires called for Stumps. It looked highly improbable that they would survive the final day. It was a delayed start to proceedings after a delay of a little over one-and-a-half hours due to rain and wet outfield.

At the time of writing, Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes are at the crease. A lot would rest on these two as far as the hosts are concerned. The Shubman Gill-led India, on the other hand, would be aiming at wrapping up the game as soon as possible and drawing level after a disappointing five-wicket defeat in the series opener at Headingley, Leeds.
