India continued their dominant performance in the second Test at Edgbaston as Akash Deep dismissed Ben Duckett for the second time in the match. After Shubman Gill’s historic performance with the bat, scoring a double century and a ton in the same Test, guiding the visitors to a giant second-innings total of 427/6 declared, and setting a target of 608 runs for England, the second-highest they’ve ever set in a Test.

The first blood was drawn by Mohammed Siraj, who dismissed Zak Crawley, courtesy of a sharp catch at gully by substitute Sai Sudharsan. With the home team still recovering from the first wicket, Akash delivered just three overs later, sending Duckett back to the pavilion for the second time in the match.

Coming in around the wicket, the pacer bowled a back-of-a-length delivery that angled in. The southpaw, batting outside the crease, tried to punch it with an angled bat, but only managed a thick inside edge that redirected onto the middle stump. Duckett walked back after a 25 off 15 balls, with five boundaries, but once again fell prey to Deep.

Earlier in the day, India’s second innings was built around Gill’s brilliance and cameos from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. Gill’s 161 in the second innings, along with his first-innings double ton, made him only the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score a hundred and a double hundred in the same Test. He also joins an elite list of just nine batters in Test history to achieve this feat.

Furthermore, he is also the second captain to do so in England, following Graham Gooch’s iconic effort against India at Lord’s in 1990. Alongside Gill, vice-captain, Pant added 65, and a 69 by Jadeja further pushed England back in the game. At the time of writing, the home team’s scorecard read 49/2, needing 558 runs to win the Test
