Rajasthan Royals’ new head coach Rahul Dravid and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara recently met at the franchise’s office and were reflecting on some of the most hilarious stump-mic moments from their playing days.

During their chat, Dravid and Sangakkara were asked whether stump mics have become more advanced or if wicketkeepers have started sledging more frequently. The former Indian captain, funnily pointed at his Sri Lankan partner, stating players should learn a few tips from him.

“All these guys need to learn a few things from him,” Dravid said in a clip shared by Rajasthan Royals on their social media handle X, to which the Sri Lankan legend replied, “I never said a word.” Dravid further added, “Stump-mics have become louder and better, I think.”

Sangakkara then shared an incident involving either Moin Khan or Rashid Latif, who was caught sledging in English. However, when called up by the match referee, the player defended himself by revealing he doesn’t speak English, making the duo burst out in laughter.

“I think was it Moin Khan or Rashid Latif who was accused of sledging, the batter and then on the stump mic, it had come through in perfect English. When the match referee had a hearing, he said ‘I am sorry, I don’t speak English’,” Sangakkara said.

The former Sri Lankan captain also revealed how wicketkeepers used to sledge by covering the mics with their boots, however with advanced technologies and increased volumes of the stump mics it’s hard to get away.

“We used to cover the stump mics, like with a boot. The stump mic was just behind the stumps, and you just covered it with your foot. Then you have a say, and then you take it off. But now I think they have increased the volumes at times,” Sangakkara further added.

Meanwhile, Dravid was formally announced as Rajasthan Royals’ new head coach on September 6, 2024, for a multi-year term after guiding India to the T20 World Cup title in June. Dravid, who last featured in the IPL in 2019 before taking charge of the National Cricket Academy and later becoming India’s head coach, is now back in the Royals’ camp, working closely with skipper Sanju Samson and the management.

On the other hand, Sangakkara has been a key figure in Rajasthan Royals’ team, having joined in 2021 and playing a crucial role in their IPL 2022 runners-up finish. Under his guidance, the Royals secured playoff berths in consecutive seasons, finishing third in 2024. The former southpaw is set to serve as RR’s director of cricket for the coming season.

Recently, Dravid and Sangakkara were spotted enjoying a casual batting session in Jaipur. Though they never played for the same team, for fans it was a sight to watch with two legends batting together.
