In the final league match of the ongoing Sri Lanka Women’s ODI Tri-Series, South Africa registered a clinical 76-run victory over hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo on May 9. With the finalists already confirmed, Sri Lanka and India, the Proteas were already eliminated, and went back home with a win, courtesy of an all-round performance by Chloe Tryon.

Put into bat for the second time in four matches, the visitors were confident of ending their campaign with a win. The return of regular skipper Laura Wolvaardt from illness provided a significant boost. However, the side lost early wickets, which hampered their innings initially. Dewmi Vihanga was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka, picking up a five-wicket haul. But a brilliant 104 off 84 balls from Annerie Dercksen and an important 74 off 51 by Tryon got the side back on track. Their 112-run stand for the seventh wicket pushed the total to 315/9.

Nadine de Klerk’s unbeaten 32 off 19, while Wolvaardt (33) and Tazmin Brits (38) also made significant contributions to the score. Despite a fine spell by Vihanga, Sri Lanka’s bowlers leaked runs at a high rate.

Chasing 316, the home team made a solid start. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu’s 52 off 57 and Anushka Sanjeewani’s 43* kept them in the hunt, but they collapsed once Tryon came into bowl. The all-rounder claimed 5/34, including a hat-trick. Notably, she became the first player to score a fifty and take a hat-trick in a Women’s ODI. Ayabonga Khaka also chipped in with two wickets.

Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 239 in 42.5 overs, falling 76 runs short of the target. The home side will head back to the drawing board after this defeat and reflect on the loss. They have just two days to regroup and fine-tune their approach before facing India in the tri-series final on May 11.
