Multiple memorable events transpire every year and leave a mark on the fans of the game for years to come. The year 2024 was no different. Throughout the year, various notable events occurred and a plethora of records were made and the old ones were broken. On that note let’s take a look at the top five all-time records broken in international cricket in the year gone by.
5. Most runs and most sixes in a calendar year in T20s
Nicholas Pooran tumbled records left, right, and center in the shortest format in 2024. Pooran made 2331 runs from 76 matches at a strike rate of 157.39 and broke Mohammad Rizwan’s record (2036 runs) set in 2021. Pooran was at his explosive best not just in T20Is, but all T20 leagues around the world. He was also the key cog in the West Indies’ charge to the Super 8 stage in the T20 World Cup.

Pooran eventually broke the record for the most sixes in a calendar year in T20 cricket, racking up a massive 170 maximums in 2024, breaking Chris Gayle’s record of 135 sixes in 2015. While Pooran had a plenty of success as a player, he also managed to succeed as a leader. The southpaw led MI Emirates to the ILT20 title at the beginning of the year.
4. Most runs in a calendar year in women’s international
Smriti Mandhana did what she does best and set more records along the way in a fantastic 2024. Mandhana set the record for the most runs by a player in women’s international cricket in a calendar year, scoring 1659 runs from 37 matches with five centuries.
While Mandhana had a year to remember, the Indian women’s team did not as they finished runners-up at the Asia Cup then and failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup semifinals. Their overall record in bilaterals was not pleasing either. However, India had a smooth time in both Tests and ODIs winning the only Test they played this year and winning three ODI series in a row towards the end of the year.

Along the way, Mandhana also broke the records for the most runs and fifties in women’s T20Is and the most centuries in Women’s ODIs in a calendar year. As a leader, Mandhana won the WPL with RCB.
3. Highest total in all T20 cricket
Barely a month after Zimbabwe had laid into the Gambia in Nairobi, Braoda let all their aggression out on Sikkim in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to shatter the record for the highest T20 total. Baroda met Sikkim in Indore during group stages of the SMA Trophy in what was a dead rubber as Baroda had made it to the quarter-finals while Sikkim stood no chance.
Baroda went all out as they had nothing to lose. Openers Shashwat Rawat (43 off 16) and Abhimanyusingh Rajput (53 off 17) laid a platform, which was perfectly utilised by Bhanu Pania (134* off 51). Pania reached his fifty in 20 balls and hundred in 42 balls in a knock laden with a groundbreaking 15 sixes.
Shivalik Sharma (55 off 17) and Vishnu Solanki (50 off 16) continued the work of the top order and eventually Baroda posted a staggering 349/5 – five runs more than Zimbabwe’s total against Gambia. Sikkim’s Roshan Kumar suffered the ignominy of conceding the most runs in a T20, with his four overs going for 81. Sikkim, needless to say, was never actually in the chase and only managed 86/7.
2. Highest team total in Women’s Tests
India became the first team to post a team total of over 600 in a Women’s Test, racking up 603/6d against South Africa in Chennai in the only Test they played in the year.. India’s total was built on the back of Shahfali Varma’s 205 and Smriti Mandhana’s 149 while three other batters made fifties.
Sneh Rana’s 8/77, the third best-ever in Women’s Tests, then helped India to enforce the follow-on. South Africa fared better in the second innings, ensuring that India had to bat again. However, the hosts did not lose any wickets, chasing the 37-run target with ease.
The more interesting tidbit is that the previous record stood merely for months as Australia had set it by scoring 575/9d against South Africa only four months ago.
1. The only team to win a T20 World Cup unbeaten
India, under captain Rohit Sharma, brought smiles to a billion people’s faces as the team won the T20 World Cup trophy after 17 years. The win ended India’s 11-year title drought at ICC tournaments as the team had not won any tournament since the 2013 Champions Trophy.
The remarkable aspect of India’s victory in 2024 was that they did not lose a single match in the entire tournament. Barring India’s group stage fixture against Canada, which was rained off even without the toss, India won all the matches.

India managed to wring out wins from situations that looked lost, especially in the group stage against Pakistan and then in the final against South Africa. Remarkably, those were the only two matches that India did not fully dominate and was made to fight for the win. It is fitting that India’s unbeaten run to the title makes it as the top record broken in all of cricket in 2024.
