India begins their Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday, October 4. Ahead of India’s departure to the UAE, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur addressed the media and spoke about her expectations from the Women in Blue at the marquee event.

The inaugural T20 World Cup was played in 2009 and India have made to the final on only one occasion, in 2009. However, Harmanpreet asserted that her team is ready to put up a strong show in the 10-team tournament, which begins on October 3. The Indian captain said that there are some players who have been in the team for quite some time and know what is expected from them.

“…if I talk about this team, we have few players who have been playing for a longer time and they know their roles really well and yeah, I’m quite confident with this team and I can say that yeah, this is the best team we are going for the T20 World Cup,” Harmanpreet told the media on Tuesday, September 24.

Start of the season, I think there will be a little bit of bounce on the surface: Amol Muzumdar

India’s head coach Amol Muzumdar was also present in the press conference and was asked to give his reaction to the change in venue for the tournament from Bangladesh to UAE. The 49-year-old recalled his experience of coaching in the Indian Premier League, which was held in the UAE in 2020, and said that there tends to be some bounce for the bowlers in the initial stages of the season, especially in Dubai.

“I think it came as a surprise to every one of us. We had specifically gone to Bangladesh in the month of May and played five T20s over there, just to get used to the conditions. But, you know, things have changed and it has shifted to Dubai. I think conditions would be similar to what we have over here in India. But just that start of their season, what my experience is in the IPL when in 2020, I was there. Start of the season, I think there will be a little bit of bounce on the surface. In Dubai, especially. But rest, overhead conditions, they remain the same just like in India,” Muzumdar explained.
