SL vs AUS 2025: Chamindu Wickramasinghe removed from squad for ODI series

SL vs AUS 2025: Chamindu Wickramasinghe removed from squad for ODI series

Batting all-rounder, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, has been left out from Sri Lanka’s squad for their upcoming two-match ODI series against Australia. This marks the only change from Sri Lanka’s squad from their tour against New Zealand. The current squad has been trimmed down to 16.

The exclusion of the seam-bowling all-rounder could be attributed to the home conditions of Sri Lanka. Bearing in mind that the conditions would be conducive to the spinners in addition to the upcoming Champions Trophy being played in similar conditions, the decision that the think tank has made in Wickramsinghe’s regards.

The famous “horses-for-courses” policy seems to have been applied by the team management when it comes to opting Dunith Wellalage ahead of Wickramasinghe. Wellalage has been a critical component for the Sri Lankan unit with his disciplined left-arm spin in addition to his abilities with the bat. Wickramasinghe had to make room, making the original 17-member squad to that comprising 16 members.

The remainder of the squad, as mentioned above, is the same as that from the three-match ODI tour to New Zealand. Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando shall continue to spearhead the pace-bowling department. They will be assisted by the relatively-inexperienced duo of Mohamed Shiraz and Eshan Malinga. As far as the spinners are concerned, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Jeffrey Vandersay will be the frontline options with Wellalage and skipper, Charith Asalanka, being the other alternatives.

Colombo will serve as the venue for both the games, scheduled to be played on February 12 and February 14, respectively. The couple of fixtures are set to serve the Aussies a chance to fine-tune their skills ahead of the impending Champions Trophy 2025.
