The ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy has seen ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah carrying the majority share of India’s bowling workload. Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri has pointed out the urgency of Mohammed Shami’s return to the team, mentioning his potential to balance the bowling attack and ease the pressure on Bumrah.

Shami, one of India’s top pacers, has been on the comeback journey following a year-long break due to an ankle injury. Representing Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), the 34-year-old has claimed eight wickets in seven games and delivered economical spells.

Speaking during commentary on the second day of the ongoing pink-ball Test at Adelaide, Shastri asked for Shami’s return. “The quicker Mohammed Shami reaches here, (the) better (it is) for India. He is playing a lot of domestic matches,” Shastri said.

Despite this progress, Shami has yet to receive fitness clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Sports Science wing of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is closely monitoring his physical fitness, focusing on whether he can take the pressure of playing Test cricket. He is expected to stay with the Bengal squad for SMAT knockouts.

Shastri praised Shami’s contributions to India’s success in Australia, where he has picked 31 wickets in eight Tests. The former coach advised to not rush his return, asking Melbourne or Sydney as more realistic options for his inclusion.

“You can see the pressure (on the opposition) when Bumrah is bowling and others are bowling. There is a lot of pressure on Bumrah. Brisbane might be too early but surely (Shami can be available for) Melbourne and Sydney,” the 62-year-old said.

While Shami’s absence is undoubtedly felt, sources within the BCCI are careful about his immediate inclusion. The NCA is yet to give an all-clear report, and the veteran pacer might miss the series altogether.
