IPL 2024: Team-wise one player who might be benched for whole season

The IPL 2024 auction gave all ten franchises a chance to build their squad in the best way possible. All of them filled up gaps in their squads, be it in batting, bowling, or even wicketkeeping. But as the rules go, only a handful of players are going to be first-choice picks.

The franchises have picked some players as backups as well, in case, their first-choice player becomes unavailable due to any reason. Be it injury or personal issues, the teams are ready with the players who get to prepare in the same way the main squad does. However, there are going to be at least 1-2 players in each franchise, that might not get any game in the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

And today, we take a look at one such player, team-wise, who might be benched for the entire IPL 2024.

Here is Team-wise one player who might be benched for the whole IPL 2024 season:

1. Delhi Capitals- Shai Hope

Shai Hope earned his maiden Indian Premier League contract in the IPL 2024 auction. He was bought by the Delhi Capitals for his base price. DC had gone on a rampage buying wicketkeepers in the IPL 2024 auction as they wanted backups in case Rishabh Pant didn’t keep a wicket in the tournament.

Shai Hope’s T20 numbers are decent with 2225 runs in 95 matches with one century and 10 fifties at a strike rate of 126.56. He is also a safe keeper with 41 catches and nine stumpings to his name. However, given that there are the likes of Kumar Kushagra, Tristan Stubbs, Abishek Porel, and Ricky Bhui in line for the keeping slot, it seems unlikely that Hope will get a chance to play a match in IPL 2024.

2. Gujarat Titans- Robin Minz

Robin Minz received a huge INR 3.60 Cr bid from the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024 auction. Minz, who hails from Jharkhand is a hard-hitting batter and a wicketkeeper. He is the first Adivasi – indigenous Indian – to become an IPL player. Minz has been influenced by MS Dhoni and plays for the same club in Ranchi- Sonnet Cricket Club.

But with the presence of Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade as keepers, Robin Minz might not get to play in the IPL 2024 as GT has a wealth of opening batters as well. Minz, if he doesn’t get a chance to play in this IPL season, should look at this as a learning curve and gain knowledge from the best of the best in the GT squad.

3. Lucknow Super Giants- Ashton Turner

Ashton Turner was bought by the LSG franchise for his base price of INR 1 Cr. Turner provides LSG with an option of a solid middle-order batter, who can hit big sixes. He is also more than a capable bowler. He is known for producing an amazing match-winning innings for Australia in an ODI in India in 2018-19.

Meanwhile, Turner captained Perth Scorchers in the recent BBL 2023-24, but his tournament ended midway after suffering a knee injury. He underwent surgery for a meniscus tear in his right knee and hopes to recover in time for the IPL 2024. But given the batting firepower LSG possesses, it remains to be seen whether and when Turner gets his chance to shine, or if he warms the bench the whole season.

4. Punjab Kings- Rishi Dhawan

Rishi Dhawan proved to be an amazing addition to Punjab Kings in the last two seasons, as he filled up the spot of an all-rounder when the franchise was short of players. In 12 matches in the last two seasons, Dhawan picked 7 wickets and made 57 runs as well. To be noted, Rishi Dhawan had made his IPL comeback in 2022 after 6 years.

Dhawan has also played for India, featuring in three ODIs and one T20I. But with PBKS bringing in Harshal Patel and Chris Woakes to aid Kagiso Rabada, Sam Curran, and others in the pace department; it seems Rishi Dhawan might struggle to find a place in the PBKS XI. It can very well happen that Rishi Dhawan might spend the whole of IPL 2024 waiting for his chance.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad- Anmolpreet Singh

Anmolpreet Singh got only 4 matches to prove himself in the IPL 2023 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, as the team management struggled to find the right combination. He made 105 runs with a best of 36 at a strike rate of 128.05. Despite his decent record in T20s of 1199 runs in 63 matches with one century and 6 fifties, Anmolpreet has struggled to cement his place in the SRH XI.

His chances of making an impact have been further lessened with Travis Head joining the already impressive batting lineup of Mayank Agarwal, Heinrich Klaasen, Rahul Tripathi, Abdul Samad, Abhishek Sharma, Aiden and Markram. Anmolpreet might have to warm the bench in the entire IPL 2024.

Donovan Ferreira was bought by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2022 auction as he represented RR’s sister franchise in SA20. However, the keeper batter warmed the bench the entire season with no spot created for him in the playing XI. However, Ferreira, since then has made his South Africa T20I debut scoring 60 runs in 2 games.

But things don’t look too bright for Ferreira in terms of game time as RR has two of the best keepers in captain Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler, who both bat in the top order and the lower order, there is Riyan Parag and Rovman Powell as finishers. RR also bought the hot T20 free agent, Tom Kohler-Cadmore in the IPL 2024 auction.

Swapnil Singh, the left-arm spinner from Uttar Pradesh was added to its squad by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise for his base price in IPL 2024 auction. He has been part of the franchise like Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants in the past.

His T20 record shows 63 wickets in 75 matches with a best of 6/19 and an economy of 7.04. He also has 2 fifties to his name. Though RCB has bought him instead of trading Shahbaz Ahmed to SRH, Swapnil might not get many chances in IPL 2024 and might even stay on the bench the whole season. RCB boasts of a fearful pace attack with Karn Sharma, Mahipal Lomror, and Mayank Dagar as primary spinners.

Gus Atkinson was a last-minute buy by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024 auction. He was bought for his base price in the accelerated auction. However, it remains to be seen whether the England pacer gets any chance to play in the IPL 2024.

KKR boasts of a pace lineup led by Mitchell Starc and featuring Chetan Sakariya, Harshit Rana, and Vaibhav Arora with Andre Russell to support. In this, Atkinson will find it hard to get a game for himself in IPL 2024.

Vishnu Vinod has played for Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He made his IPL debut in 2017 and thus far has managed only 6 games with 56 runs to boast of. He has good T20 numbers with 1591 runs in 61 matches at a strike rate of 142.69 and best score of 109*.

But it will be difficult for Vinod to break into the MI XI which boasts of a star-studded batting lineup of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tim David, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma holding confirmed spots. It remains to be seen how much game time Vinod receives from the MI management who will have Hardik Pandya as their new captain.

10. Chennai Super Kings – Shaikh Rasheed

Shaikh Rasheed was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2023 auction. He was part of the Indian U19 team which won the Youth World Cup in 2022 and he was one of the major performers for the team. He warmed the bench for the whole season apart from a couple of appearances as a substitute fielder.

In his T20 career, Rasheed has played 10 matches, scoring 296 runs with a best of 100* and a strike rate of 137.67. But with the presence of MS Dhoni and Devon Conway being the backup wicketkeeper, Rasheed might have to spend this IPL 2024 on the bench as well but has the golden chance to learn from one of the all-time greats in MS Dhoni.
