New Zealand’s star batter Kane Williamson will not travel to India for the final Test match of the ongoing three-match series, as the Kiwis take a precautionary step to ensure his full fitness for the important home series against England. Though New Zealand hope to complete a historic 3-0 sweep over the mighty Indians, the long-term wellbeing of their skipper is the major priority.

Williamson suffered a groin injury during the Sri Lanka tour just before the India series last month and was expected to join the squad midway through the series. However, in his absence the Black Caps registered back-to-back victories in the first two Tests, winning their first-ever Test series in India.

With the third Test set to begin on November 1 in Mumbai, the New Zealand think tank has decided to keep their star batter back home to ensure he is fully fit for the upcoming England series.

“Kane continues to show good signs, but isn’t quite ready to jump on a plane and join us. While things are looking promising, we think the best course of action is for him to stay in New Zealand and focus on the final part of his rehabilitation so he’ll be good to go for England,” head coach Gary Stead said in a release.

The England series is extremely important for the Kiwis as they look to secure a spot in the World Test Championship final. Williamson’s availability will be crucial in that campaign, and the team management is willing to sacrifice the final Test in India to ensure their mainstay is fully fit.

“The England series is still a month away so taking the cautious approach now will ensure he is ready for the first Test in Christchurch,” Stead added.

Before the India trip, it appeared exceedingly unlikely that New Zealand would be in contention for a spot in the WTC final. However, their recent outstanding wins have brought them into the race. The Kiwis need to win each of their final four Tests to finish with a PCT of 64.29%. It will not guarantee qualifying, but it will keep them in the running. If they lose one of those tests, their percentage falls to 57.14%, which would not be sufficient for a qualification.
