IND vs ENG 2025: Shubman Gill shatters Amla’s record, fastest to 2500 ODI runs

IND vs ENG 2025: Shubman Gill shatters Amla's record, fastest to 2500 ODI runs

Shubman Gill etched his name into the record books as he became the fastest batter to reach 2,500 runs in ODI cricket. The Punjab batter broke the record set by Hashim Amla during the third and final ODI between India and England at the colossal Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad, on Wednesday, February 12.

The former South Africa legend Amla reached the 2500-run mark in his 53rd innings for South Africa. Gill reached the landmark in his 50th innings for the Men in Blue. The Indian opener needed 25 runs on Wednesday to complete 2500 runs in ODIs, and he achieved the target by hitting a boundary on the fifth ball of the 10th over of India’s innings bowled by right-arm speedster, Gus Atkinson.

Shubman Gill continued his purple patch in the ongoing series against England. He had scored a 96-ball 87 in the first ODI and a 52-ball 60 in the second. In the third ODI, he converted his start into a big score as he slammed 112 off just 102 balls, hitting 14 fours and three sixes.

Gill continued his sublime run against England in ODI series

After Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bowl first, India lost Rohit Sharma in the second over. However, Gill stitched a phenomenal partnership of 116 off 107 balls with Virat Kohli. After the latter was dismissed for a well-compiled half-century, Gill added 104 off 93 deliveries with Shreyas Iyer.

Gill was eventually dismissed by Adil Rashid after he had hit 14 fours and three sixes. This turned out to be his seventh century in ODI cricket. He has 15 half-centuries to go with it. The right-handed batter is averaging 60.16 and has a strike rate of 101.93. His knock set the foundation for India to post a mammoth total of 356 in the third ODI. The hosts have already bagged the series by winning the first two matches in the three-match series. However, both teams are playing with full intensity in Ahmedabad as this is their last dress rehearsal ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025.
