Team India (IND) and England (ENG) are gearing up to take on each other in the second ODI of the three-match series, at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, on Sunday, February 9. The Men in Blue have a 1-0 lead after a convincing four-wicket win in Nagpur, and they will be looking forward to sealing the series.
The Three Lions struggled to adapt in the first ODI, getting bowled out for 248, despite fifties from Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell. In reply, the hosts chased it down comfortably, thanks to Shubman Gill’s 87 and crucial contributions from Shreyas Iyer (59) and Axar Patel (52), respectively.
Virat Kohli, who missed the opener due to a sore knee, is expected to return, possibly replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal or a middle order batter. England must regroup quickly to stay alive in the series as they have a tough challenge ahead.
Meanwhile, check out 3 most impact England players for 2nd ODI:
3. Adil Rashid
England’s most reliable white-ball bowler, Adil Rashid has consistently shown his brilliance in the ongoing series against India. Having picked up two crucial wickets in the first match, dismissing KL Rahul and Axar Patel, Rashid will be a crucial member of England’s bowling attack in the upcoming game.
The Barabati Stadium pitch in Cuttack assists spinners mid-way, Rashid’s ability to turn the ball away from the batters will make him a major threat. The Yorkshire-born has been hard to face in the T20Is and followed it in the 50-over format.
2. Jacob Bethell
Young rising star Jacob Bethell continued to display his potential in England’s first ODI against India, scoring 51 off 64 balls. Walking in at 111/4, the 21-year-old provided much-needed stability, as he stitched a crucial 59-run stand with skipper, Jos Buttler (52). His efforts helped the English side to reach 248 before being bowled out. The southpaw reached his second ODI half-century before falling to Ravindra Jadeja.
Bethell also contributed with the ball, dismissing Shreyas Iyer and finishing with a figure of 1/18 from three overs of bowling spell. Since making his ODI debut against Australia in September 2024, the youngster has been a dependable middle-order batter with the ability to chip in with key wickets. He will be hoping for a similar showing in the upcoming Cuttack ODI in a bid to help the Three Lions level the series and stay relevant for the third and final ODI.

1. Jos Buttler
England skipper Jos Buttler has been in fine form with his bat. Coming into the series after a solid T20I performance, where he scored 146 runs in five matches and being the second highest-run-getter of the series, the veteran scored a crucial 52 off 67 balls in the first ODI. His knock, which included four boundaries, helped stabilize England’s innings at a critical Time.
Buttler started aggressively but was forced to slow down as wickets kept falling from the other end. Despite his efforts, the tourists could only manage to set a 249-run target. However, the hosts managed to chase it down in 38.4 overs to win the game by four wickets. With the action shifting to Cuttack, the 34-year-old will be eager to lead his side on a surface that has become more batting-friendly in recent years. As England look to bounce back, their skipper’s role with the bat will be important.
