The ODI World Cup 2023 is right around the corner. The marquee event is all set to begin on October 5 and will be completely hosted by India for the first time. As the tournament is all set to begin soon, the fans will be deep into thought to figure out the favourite for the competition.
Talking of the same, legendary former Australian batter Adam Gilchrist took centre stage and named his four favourites who could go all the way and lift the title. Naming the four teams who could reach the World Cup semis, Gilchrist named India, Pakistan, Australia, and England as the four possible contenders.
“I think India and Pakistan could feature; Australia and England are another two teams,” Adam Gilchrist was quoted as saying by India Today.
Furthermore, Gilchrist also placed his hopes on Australia and opined that they could do well in India, taking their learnings from the South Africa series and the upcoming warm-up games.
“Australia will learn a lot from their efforts in South Africa when they come to India. They have got three games before the World Cup against India. So, they will have a bit more of a full-strength squad there, that might tell us a bit about where they are at,” Gilchrist said.
It’s a very knowledgeable group: Gilchrist
Gilchrist also talked about how the conditions in India are vastly different from those in South Africa. Pointing out spinner Adam Zampa, Gilchrist opined that he was on the receiving end in South Africa, but with his chance coming in the ODI World Cup, Zampa will be keen on proving himself.
“Adam Zampa, in South Africa, was at the receiving end a little bit, but it’s different conditions out here in India with different pitches, and he is a world-class spin bowler, and he has shown that particularly across T20 cricket, and now he gets his chance in the 50-over World Cup. So it’s a very knowledgeable group, and they are going to have to use all that experience against batting line-ups across the globe and play without fear,” Gilchrist concluded.
