The fifth and final T20I of the series between India and England at the Wankhede Stadium was headlined by Abhishek Sharma’s outrageous power-hitting. The top-order batter raced his way to a blistering 54-ball 134-run knock, consequently recording the highest score registered by an Indian batter in T20Is. The innings, comprising a total of seven fours and 13 maximums, eventually led India to post a mammoth 247 on the board.

Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir, explained the reason behind why he felt Abhishek’s century in Mumbai was exceptionally unique.

“I haven’t seen a T20 hundred like this. And against an attack like this where you’ve got Jofra Archer and Mark Wood bowling at 150 consistently. Yeah, you might see a lot of T20 hundreds in IPL, but the quality of the attack, which was in front of him and for a young boy, I think taking them on from ball one was probably the best,” shared Gambhir while speaking to Star Sports.

Notably, Abhishek and India broke a number of records while making their way to clinching the series via a 4-1 margin. Abhishek’s 13 sixes yesterday was the highest number of maximums hit by an Indian batter in a T20I innings, eclipsing Rohit Sharma’s 10 against Sri Lanka in 2017. The hosts bundled out England for only 97 during the run-chase. As a consequence, England were handed their biggest defeat in the 20-over format up until now.

India will now turn their focus to the three ODIs lined up in front of them. The 50-over series opener is scheduled to commence on February 6. Subsequent to the conclusion of the white-ball series, the 15-member side drafted for the Champions Trophy will make their way to the United Arab Emirates to participate in the marquee ODI tournament. For the unversed, Abhishek is not a part of the ODI squad as well as that for the Champions Trophy.
