Explained: What are the rules for accelerated round in IPL 2024 auction?

The much-awaited IPL 2024 auction will get underway on Tuesday, December 19 at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. A total of 333 players are set to go under the hammer during the bidding event out of which 214 are Indians while 119 are overseas players of which 2 players are from associate nations. The ten franchises will be seen getting into a bidding war amongst each other to fill the remaining 77 slots across their teams.  Notably, the total 333 players have been put under 19 sets for mega event.

The auction will begin with the auctioneer announcing the names of the players in the first ten sets containing both capped and uncapped players under every category namely batters, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers and spinners. Franchises will then place their bids for the players they’re interested in by raising their paddles. As per the list shared by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), a total of 70 players come under the first ten sets.

After the completion of the first ten sets, a long break will be given to the franchises where they will be asked to submit the names of the players from the remaining nine sets containing 263 players whom they would like to buy. Following the shortlisting, members of the IPL Governing Council will then prepare a fresh list by combining all the names given by the ten franchises who will then feature in the accelerated round.

Accelerated rounds will continue until all ten teams have finalized their squads

Furthermore, if any of the franchises hasn’t completed its squad after the first accelerated round, the second one will be conducted where the remaining teams will once again have to submit names of the players they’re interested in buying from the unsold list. The process will keep on repeating until all ten franchises have completed their squads of 25 players each.
