India’s young Test skipper, Shubman Gill, registered his name in the history books by becoming only the second Indian and ninth overall to score a double century and a century in the same Test match. The 25-year-old achieved this rare feat during the second Test against England at Edgbaston.

Gill, who had already hammered his highest Test score of 269 in the first innings, followed it up with a ton in the second. With this, he surpassed the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s 344 runs against the West Indies in 1971, recording 369* runs in a single match. In his first series as skipper, he now has three centuries in four innings.

With this performance, Gill joins an elite list of just nine batters in Test history to register a double hundred and a ton in the same match. He is only the second Indian to do so after Gavaskar. He is also the second captain to do so in England, following Graham Gooch’s iconic effort against India at Lord’s in 1990.

In this Test alone, he has been involved in three 100-plus stands, a feat previously achieved by only a few Indian batters in away Tests, including Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. On Day 4, Gill partnered with Rishabh Pant (55), and the duo added 110 off 103 balls. Later, the right-hander built a 68-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja as India’s lead went past 480. His second-innings hundred came off 129 balls and included nine fours and three sixes.
