Chennai Super Kings have had a mixed season so far in the Indian Premier League 2024. With seven wins in 13 matches so far, and will be playing their last league stage fixture at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, taking on hosts Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Saturday, May 18. A comprehensive win in the encounter will see CSK book a spot for the IPL 2024 Playoffs.

The defending champions will look to go all guns blazing for contesting yet another knockout, this time under the captaincy of new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Maharashtra-born took over the leadership reigns from veteran skipper MS Dhoni, who led them to joint-most five championships in the cash-rich league. With immense charisma and popularity among fans, speculations regarding the 42-year-old’s retirement from the league has sparked a lot of talks.

Weighing in on the skyrocketed fanboyism for MS Dhoni across the world, former CSK batter Ambati Rayudu opined that for fans, the Ranchi-born is bigger than the franchise.

“Even when you hit a six and a four, the crowd is silent, me and Jadeja felt that in the last few years. I really believe when I say this, that CSK fans are MS Dhoni fans first, and CSK fans later. Even Jadeja gets frustrated, but he cannot do anything,” Rayudu said on Star Sports.

The last Thala Dharisanam?

Amid speculation that this might be his final appearance in the tournament, the veteran wicketkeeper’s fandom has surged to new heights this season. Despite injury concerns, Dhoni has displayed exceptional hitting prowess, reigniting enthusiasm among fans. His impactful contributions in the final overs have caused havoc for opponents, as the retired stalwart consistently dispatches seasoned bowlers for massive sixes.

Thus far, Dhoni has batted in 10 out of CSK’s 13 matches, notching up 136 runs with an explosive strike rate of 226.67. Nevertheless, injuries have plagued him, often requiring ice packs and heavy strapping on his left leg, as seen mid-match and during post-match presence on the field. With injuries mounting over IPL 2024 and CSK organizing a victory lap post their final home game against RR this season, it seems more and more evident that the 17th edition might just be the swansong for Thala.
