Top 3 performances of Tony Lock

Tony Lock was a part of the English side in the 1950s and the early 1960s, when they had the best attack in the world. Along with Fred Trueman, Frank Tyson, and James Laker, Lock formed a fierce bowling lineup and helped England dominate the decade at the highest level.

The left-arm orthodox spinner played 49 Tests for England and took 174 wickets at an average of 25.58 and an economy rate of 2.03. Some of his best performances came in the period 1956-59. Here are the top 3 performances of Tony Lock in International Cricket –

4/14 and 7/51 against New Zealand, 3rd Test, Headingley, 1958

On a challenging surface to bat on, English spin duo of James Laker and Tony Lock ran through the batting lineup of New Zealand, dismissing them for just 67 runs as Lock claimed 4/14. England scored 267/2 before declaring their innings, owing to the playing conditions. New Zealand had no answers to the spin duo yet again, as they were dismissed for 129, with Lock claiming 7/51 in his 35.2 overs.

5/28 and 6/20 against West Indies, 5th Test, Kennington Oval, 1957

England scored a good total of 412 in their first innings in the Oval Test of 1957 against West Indies. Lock wreaked havoc by claiming 5/28 in his 21.4 overs, as West Indies was dismissed for just 89 runs. Even in the second innings, Lock was at his supreme best as he claimed 6/20 in his 16 overs and helped England dismiss West Indies for just 86 runs, as the home side won by an innings and 237 runs.

5/31 and 6/53 against New Zealand, 1st Test, Christchurch, 1959

Batting first, England posted 374 on the board at Christchurch in 1959 against New Zealand. In reply, New Zealand was bowled out twice in just a little over 72 overs. Lock bowled well in both innings, as he claimed 5/31 in the first innings in his 26 overs and followed it up with a 6/53 in 28.2 overs and helped his side win by an innings and 99 runs.
