Mohammad Ashraful could be considered as one of the most promising talents to have emerged out of Bangladesh. He burst onto the international scene as a dazzling teenager hailed for his flair and strokeplay.
Ashraful quickly became a household name. Despite his international career being plagued with inconsistency, he played an important part in Bangladesh cricket. Below are some memorable knocks to reflect on as he turns 41.
1) 114 off 212 vs Sri Lanka (2001)

It was an incredible knock by a 17-year-old Ashraful in what was his second innings on Test debut. He top-scored for Bangladesh in both innings (26 in the first innings) to wrap up a memorable debut against a fine Lankan outfit in Colombo.
Bangladesh lost the game by an innings and 137 runs. Despite that, Ashraful shared the Player of the Match award with Muttiah Muralitharan for becoming the youngest player to score a Test century.
2) 100 off 101 vs Australia (2005)

Ashraful only scored three ODI tons in the 169 innings he played in ODIs. However, this knock against the mighty Australian unit is arguably one of the best innings to be played against a bowling attack of that calibre.
Ashraful paced his innings perfectly well to get to his ton. Although he did not stay till the end, he had ensured Bangladesh won a famous 50-over game against Australia in the 2005 edition of the NatWest Series.
3) 87 off 83 vs South Africa (2007)

It was courtesy Ashraful’s 83-ball 87-run knock that Bangladesh could get to 251/8 at the end of 50 overs after being asked to bat first against South Africa in 2007 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. It turned out to be match-defining knock at the end as Bangladesh recorded a famous 67-run win against the Proteas. It was their only win in the Super Eights of the 2007 Cricket World Cup, after obtaining victories against India and Bermuda in the league phase.
