John Wright was known more for his coaching stint than his cricketing career with New Zealand. He was the man who transformed Indian cricket along with Sourav Ganguly. The Kiwi cricketer was one of the best players in New Zealand of his time. 

Wright played 82 Tests and scored 5334 runs at an average of 37.83, including 12 hundreds and 23 fifties. He played 148 ODIs and scored 3891 runs at an average of 26.47 and a strike rate of 57.19. He scored a hundred and 24 fifties in the format. Here are the three best performances of John Wright in international cricket:

101(120) against England, 3rd ODI, Napier, 1988

England batted first and posted 219 runs on the board in the third ODI in Napier against New Zealand. Chasing a tricky total at home, New Zealand lost the wicket of Robert Vance early. Wright played the best knock of his ODI career and steered his team to a win as he scored 101 runs in 120 balls at a strike rate of 84.17, which included 15 fours as New Zealand beat England by seven wickets.

185(443) against India, 1st Test, Christchurch, 1990

New Zealand batted first and scored 459 runs in the Christchurch Test in 1990. Wright had to navigate the challenging conditions early in the match. The Kiwi opener batted long and deep, as he faced 443 balls and scored 185 runs, which included 23 fours. In reply, India scored 164, and followed it up with a 296. New Zealand had to score just two runs. Wright won the POTM Award for his knock.

13 and against Australia, 3rd Test, Christchurch, 1982

This was arguably Wright’s best knock in his career, as it came against a bowling attack comprising of Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, Terry Alderman, and Bruce Yardley. Australia batted first and posted 353 in challenging conditions. In reply, New Zealand were dismissed for 149, of which Wright managed just 13. Following on, the home side scored 272 runs. Wright scored 141(262), which included 26 fours. Despite his efforts, his team lost the match by eight wickets.
