Three most successful partnerships between captain and coach

The captain and the coach of any Cricket Team are two absolute pillars of the side. Over the years, we have seen some amazing coach-captain partnerships in the game who went on to achieve maximum success. The current Indian pairing of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma is also a complementing pair. However, the list is extensive and hard to rank when discussing the most successful captain-coach pairings. Here is an attempt at ranking the three best pairings over the years.

3. John Wright and Sourav Ganguly

John Wright and Sourav Ganguly are the coach-captain pairing credited with changing Indian Cricket. Sourav Ganguly, who assumed the role of captain in 2000, led the group with his characteristic aggression and flair. Ganguly, alongside the subdued John Wright, were a great match and worked well together.

They oversaw some of the Indian team’s best victories. The victory in the test series against Australia in 2000–01, made famous by the valour of VVS Laxman and Harbhajan Singh, gave Indian cricketers fresh hope and contributed to creating a fearless team.

In the Natwest Trophy final against England at Lord’s, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif orchestrated one of India’s most memorable victories. Ganguly and Wright took a special interest in developing fresh talent, which paid off.

2. John Buchanan and Ricky Ponting

When John Buchanan was appointed in 1999, he was tasked with leading an exceptionally talented Australian team. Buchanan commanded the team admirably and helped his team become known as the most fearsome and dominant side, together with Ricky Ponting as captain. The two were capable people, and their relationship greatly aided the team’s cause.

Australia enjoyed unprecedented success as the best ODI and Test team during this period. The pair guided the team to 23 ODI victories in World Cup clashes and a record-breaking 16 straight victory in Test matches. Their flawless record includes wins in the Ashes in 2002 and 2006, the Test Series against India in 2004, the Champions Trophy in 2006, and two straight World Cup titles in 2003 and 2007.

1. Gary Kirsten and MS Dhoni

Gary Kirsten and MS Dhoni

Gary Kirsten and MS Dhoni have been one of, if not the most well-known Coach-Captain relationships in Indian cricket. Gary and Dhoni got along well because of how similar the former was to John Wright in nature. The expectations of the Indian Cricket Team’s fans are never low; thus, coaching and serving as captain is no joke. The pair turned the tide with straight series victories against Australia, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand after an initially difficult period in which they had to deal with unfavourable results.

Going into the 2011 ODI World Cup, played at home, team India was under a lot of pressure following the 2007 World Cup disaster. The team had to perform because there were great expectations from the fans. Ultimately, the 2011 World Cup, in which Kirsten and Dhoni famously led India to a World Cup victory after 28 years, proved to be the pinnacle of both players’ professional careers. The duo also helped India win its first Test Championship in 2009.
