OTD: ‘Sultan of Swing’ Wasim Akram turns 57

There have been a lot of good fast bowlers in cricket’s history. There is however one name that always comes up whenever the greatest bowlers are discussed and that is Wasim Akram. Born on June 3rd 1966, Akram rose to the cricketing greats and wrote his name into the history books.

From a young age, Akram displayed immense promise in cricket. He made his international debut for Pakistan in 1984, and it wasn’t long before he established himself as a key player in the national team. Blessed with exceptional pace, swing, and accuracy, Akram became known for his ability to make the ball talk. His lethal left-arm swing bowling troubled even the most skilled batsmen.

Akram’s prowess was not limited to his bowling skills alone. He was also a fearsome lower-order batsman, known for his aggressive stroke play. His ability to turn the game on its head with his powerful hitting often left opponents stunned. Akram’s quick runs and match-winning innings made him a valuable asset to the Pakistani team.

Throughout his career, Akram achieved numerous milestones and records. He became the first bowler in the world to reach the 500-wicket mark in ODI cricket. He finished his career with an impressive tally of 414 Test wickets and 502 ODI wickets. Akram’s ability to consistently deliver outstanding performances against top-quality opposition solidified his status as one of the greatest cricketers of all time.
