OTD| One of IPL’s finest finds Sanju Samson was born in 1994

OTD| One of IPLs finest finds Sanju Samson was born in 1994

The Wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson is celebrating his 29th birthday. He has been one of the brightest young stars in the Indian Premier League. He has evolved over the years and become one of the most pivotal players. His story with Rajasthan Royals has been the stuff of dreams. From idolizing Rahul Dravid to sharing the dressing room with him in Rajasthan Royals to now leading the franchise, it has been a surreal ride for him.

The Beginning

Sanju Samson made his domestic debut at a very young age. He made his domestic debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy for Kerala in 2011. In the same year, he played his first Ranji Trophy match against Vidarbha.

His performances in domestic cricket led to his selection in the squad for the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He was also appointed the vice-captain of that side. Samson utilized the opportunity and emerged as the leading run-scorer for India in that tournament.

He did not have to wait long for the India call-up. He was called up for the England series in 2014 but did not get the opportunity to make his debut. In 2015 he was announced as the replacement for the injured Ambati Rayudu and made his T20 debut against Zimbabwe. However, because of his inconsistency, he did not get a look for the ODI side until 2021 when he made his debut against Sri Lanka.

The Overview

Sanju Samson has been very close to that permanent place in the Indian setup but has not been able to make the final cut. He was agonizingly close to the selection for the 2023 ODI World Cup squad but KL Rahul’s comeback from injury played spoilsport. His recent ODI performances have been brilliant. Samson has played 13 One-Day internationals for India where he has scored 390 runs at an astonishing average of 55.71.

The wicketkeeper-batsman is definitely in contention for the next T20 World Cup in 2024. If he stays consistent with his performances, he might finally get what he has been working hard for, a permanent place in the Indian team.
