Everybody had ruled out that the Jamaica Tallawahs could win the title against Barbados Royals. Their star overseas bowler Mohammad Amir, who had been very effective in the power plays, had been ruled out due to a groin injury. However, Brandon Kings’ 83 helped Jamaica get their third title after a gap of 6 years.
The Barbados Royals won the toss and decided to bat first. Despite getting a good start with 63 runs in the powerplay, they could only manage to get 161 runs on the board. Fabian Allen broke the opening partnership and got the Tallhawas back in the game.
He sent back Kyle Mayers (29) and Rahkeem Cornwall (36) in the middle order to put pressure on the Royals. It was Azam Khan, for Barbados, who did the heavy lifting with his 51 in 40 balls. For Jamaica, Allen and Nicholson Gordon were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each. Apart from them, Imad Wasim also took a wicket in the match.
Jamaica Tallahwas get off to a timid start in the chase
The two-time previous champions were off to a poor start as they lost opener Kennar Lewis for a golden duck in the first over itself. Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks then formed a good partnership, but they were slow to begin with as they could only manage 41 runs in the powerplay.
However, eyeing the trophy for the third time, the two pushed down the accelerator to get quick runs. They added 87 runs on the scoreboard before Brooks was sent back for 47 on the second ball of the 11th over.
On the other hand, King continued hitting the ball as he was joined by skipper Rovman Powell in the middle. It only took the team 16.1 overs to complete the match as King completed the season with a six off Mujeeb Ur Rahaman.
