OTD| Former England wicketkeeper-batter Matt Prior was born in 1982

Former English wicketkeeper-batter, Matthew Prior, has turned 42 today. Prior was one of the key players for England for a long time in both red ball and limited overs cricket. In his days the Englishman was one of the best wicketkeeper-batters across the globe.

Matt Prior was born in South Africa but he came to England at a very young age and started his cricketing journey there. He made his international debut for England in 2004 when he got the opportunity to play his maiden ODI match against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo. The youngster had to wait for three years to get a call-up for the Test squad. When he finally got the call-up in 2007, he was selected for the Test series against West Indies. The wicketkeeper-batter made his Test debut in the first match of the Test series at the iconic Lord’s. A month later he also represented England in T20I cricket for the first time, against the same opposition.

A consistent feature in Tests

Matt Prior represented England in all formats of the game but he brought his best in the longest format of the game, Test cricket. Prior remained a regular part of the English Test team for most of his international career. He played 79 Test matches for England scoring 4099 runs at an average of 40.18, impressive for a lower-order batter. The Englishman also smashed 7 centuries in his Test career along with 28 half-centuries.

Matt Prior could not translate his success in Test cricket in the 50 overs format. In ODI cricket he played 68 matches where he accumulated 1282 runs at an average of 24.18. He also had a short stint in T20I cricket representing England 10 times in the shortest format. However, Prior could only score 127 runs in those games. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter played his last international game in 2014 which ended in an unfortunate defeat against India at Lord’s.
