OTD | Ajay Jadeja and others were involved in violence with stump and bat during Duleep Trophy Final in 1991

On this day in 1991, an ugly fight broke out between the players of the North Zone and the West Zone in the Duleep Trophy final. Raman Lamba of North Zone, Rashid Patel and Ajay Jadeja of West Zone were involved in the fight. It all started as Lamba bowled a series of bouncers to try and tame the batter. Raman even confronted the batters with a warning to bounce them out.

Lamba confronted the bowler with the bat as a counter-warning. It did not go well with the North Zone bowler, who picked up one of the stumps and attacked Rashid. To protect themselves, Ajay Jadeja and Patel used their bats. Raman went on to hit Ajay with the stick. The crowd joined the act and pelted stones at the players. Back then, the North Zone had a big influence on domestic cricket.

A committee was set up to discuss the issue. Some of the top cricketers involved in the match like Ravi Shastri, Kiran More, and Kapil Dev escaped punishment. Shastri was accused of abusing one of the umpires in the dressing room regarding the issue. Kapil was accused of asking Manoj Prabhakar to deliver bouncers to Dilip Vengsarkar repeatedly.

The committee to inquire about the incident had members like Madhavrao Scindia, Raj Singh, and MAK Pataudi. The punishment seemed nearly the same for Raman and Lamba when it was clearly evident that the batter had defended himself with the bat while the bowler attacked with one of the stumps. Experts criticized the treatment of the case.

While Patel was handed a ban of 13 months, Lamba was banned for 10 months. The former was the one who was physically attacked by the latter. The sportsmanship of the game was in question after the incident. The high-scoring final was called off due to the incident. To date, the incident is regarded as one of the worst in the history of Indian domestic cricket.
