OTD: Aaron Finch smashes highest individual score in T20Is

The scintillating 172-run knock of Aaron Finch which came off just 76 deliveries has not been surpassed till date. Today marks seven years since the time the top-order batter steamrolled Zimbabwe in the Zimbabwe T20 Tri Series at the Harare Sports Club.

The then-Australian skipper lost the toss and Australia were asked to bat first. Finch brought up a hattrick of fours on the first three balls of the third over. His first maximum of the innings came in the subsequent over. By the time Australia were done with the powerplay, he had already raced to 56. Finch faced twice as many balls as his opening partner and made full use of those.

D’Arcy Short was allowed to ease into his innings. While he had scored only 20 runs off 25 balls at the halfway point, Finch was 20 short of his ton. A single on the final ball of the 14th over brought up his ton off just 50 balls. After Short offered a single on the first ball of the 16th, the aggressive batter showed no mercy towards Solomon Mire who was into his first over.

Finch’s 15th four brought up the team 200 and also the first time that a 200 partnership in T20Is was attained. It was in the penultimate over of the innings in which he went past his 156 against Australia from 2013. He was eventually hit wicket on the second-last ball of the innings while attempting a cut past point.

Australia went onto win the game by 100 runs as the hosts could only manage to get to 129/9 at the end of their 20 overs. Andrew Tye (3/12 in four overs) would have bagged the Player of the Match award on any other day. However, the accolade for the same was rightfully awarded to Finch for his carnage in the first innings.
