Alex Hales’ Top Three Performances in ODI Cricket

Former English batter Alex Hales played just 70 ODI games for his side during his career. With 2419 runs with six centuries and 14 half-centuries, the number may not look special. But long time fans of England’s ODI cricket will tell you the significance Alex Hales held for three years.

After England’s early exit from the ODI World Cup 2015, Eoin Morgan and the Three Lions management were looking to turn things around. In their sights was the 2019 ODI World Cup, which was to be held at home. The former Ireland born English skipper identified Alex Hales as one of his earliest weapons of change in ODI Cricket.

In this article, we take a closer look at the top three ODI innings played by Alex Hales.

Sri Lanka batted first and were restricted to just 254/7 from their allotted 50 overs. Upul Tharanga top scored with 53 as Dinesh Chandimal scored 52. Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett were the stars with the ball picking two wickets each.

Chasing 255 to win, Jason Roy and Alex Hales took the team home to an easy win unscathed. The target was achieved inside the 35th over with Jason Roy scoring 112 not out. Alex Hales though took the limelight as he was not out on 133 runs from just 110 balls with 10 fours and six massive hits into the crowd.

Tim Paine and his Australian side were touring England for a short white ball series. The visitors did not have David Warner and Steve Smith, who were banned for their part in the Sand-paper saga.

England took full advantage as they posted a then ODI record score of 481 in front of a noisy Nottingham crowd. After Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow had flayed the Aussies bowling to add 159 runs in just 19.3 overs, it was Alex Hales’ turn. The local lad scored 147 runs from just 92 balls to pulverize the visitors and score what was his final ODI ton.
