WI vs BAN (1st Test – Day 4)

The defeat was inevitable for the Tigers. But it remained to be seen how fast it would take place. On the third day, the hosts lost 3 wickets and scored 49 runs. In the last two days, they needed only 35 runs to win.

Caribbean unbeaten batsmen on the other day, John Campbell and Jermaine Blackwood played just 7 overs on the fourth day. West Indies reached the target without losing any more wickets. The hosts won the first Test in Antigua by 7 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match Test series.

The Tigers could have got defeated on the third day. If Shakib Al Hasan and Nurul Hasan had not formed a great partnership in the middle order, then there was a possibility of Bangladesh losing the game by an innings. Thanks to these two, the visitors secured a lead of 83 runs as well as avoided an innings defeat. Shakib scored 63 and Nurul scored 64 runs.

Bangladesh gave the host West Indies a target of only 84 runs in the fourth innings. On the last afternoon of the third day, Bangladesh fast bowler Khaled Ahmed took 3 wickets for 9 runs. However, Campbell and Blackwood’s unbeaten 79-run stand stopped Khaled Ahmed’s irresistible pace.

Blackwood completed the team’s 50 with doubles in the first over of the 4th day by Khaled. Shakib started the innings with Mustafizur Rahman the day before but yesterday he chose Ebadot Hossain to bowl at the other end with Khaled. However, Campbell hit him the first four runs of the day by flicking the ball on his pad. He hit another four on the next ball to complete the partnership’s fifty.

Later, Campbell hit two more fours in Khaled’s over. The first one with a soft hand, the other with a great cover drive. With the next four, the required runs of West Indies came down to one figure. Campbell reached 48 runs with those fours.

In the next over, Blackwood gave Campbell a chance to score a half-century by giving Mehidy Hasan a maiden. In the next over, Campbell played a sweep shot off Nazjmul Hossain and the ball crossed the boundary to complete his half-century off just 63 balls. He ensured victory by hitting a six in that over.

John Campbell was unbeaten on 58 off 67 balls and Jermaine Blackwood was unbeaten on 26 off 53 balls. Khaled Ahmed alone took 3 wickets for Bangladesh.

Despite Skaib Al Hasan’s 51 runs in the first innings, Bangladesh was all out for only 103 runs. West Indies were all out for 265 runs in reply. Bangladesh scored 245 runs in reply. As a result of that, West Indies got a target of 84 runs. They chased down this target and the hosts reached the port of victory in 22 overs. As a result, Bangladesh had to lose the first Test with almost 6 sessions left.

Caribbean fast bowler Kemar Roach has been selected as the Player of the Match for taking 7 wickets in two innings. The two teams will meet in the second match of the series on June 24 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.
