It has been several years since Shahid Afridi retired from international cricket. But he is not lacking in popularity. He is not only in Pakistan, but his fans are scattered in different countries. He has no fewer fans in India too. And Shahid Afridi was named ‘Boom Boom’ by an Indian. Ravi Shastri gave him this name for his devastating batting and huge sixes. Later, the name given by Shastri went viral, and the audience was delighted. So in Afridi’s cricket career, he was known as Boom Boom Afridi.

Shahid Afridi was once asked when exactly Shastri gave him this name. At first, he said he had no idea. But after some time, he said, “As far as I remember, the year was 2005 or 2006. At that time, Pakistan toured India. I scored the second-fastest hundred there in just 42 balls. Ravi Shastri was the commentator in that match. And he gave me the name ‘Boom Boom’. The name spread throughout the cricket world”.

Shahid Afridi has played 398 one-day matches in his cricketing career. According to statistics, he has hit 351 sixes in 398 matches. Seventy-three sixes came from his bat in 99 T20I matches. The former Pakistan all-rounder used to hit huge sixes with the bat as soon as he got on the field. He scored 11 196 runs with the bat in international cricket. He also took 541 wickets with the ball.

Afridi played his last ODI cricket match in 2015. He was not seen in ODI cricket after that match in Adelaide. The last T20I of his career was against the West Indies. And after that, ‘Boom Boom’ Afridi said goodbye to cricket. However, his six in 22 yards is still missed by cricket lovers.
