Vice-captain Rishabh Pant marked a sensational return to Test cricket with his seventh century while helping India into a dominant position against England in the ongoing first Test at Headingley, Leeds. Pant continued the visiting side’s momentum on Day 2 after a strong opening day led by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century.

Pant walked in after the dismissal of Jaiswal, who had scored 101 off 159 balls. The Haridwar-born faced England on their soil after he missed the home series while recovering from the injuries sustained in his car accident. He wasted no time making an impact and charged down the pitch to his second delivery from Ben Stokes, while lofting it over the bowler’s head for four, which drew laughter from the England skipper.

Pant brought up his half-century with elegance and reached 3000 Test runs on Day 1. On the following day, the left-hander reached his century in signature style, launching a massive six off Shoaib Bashir over cow corner and celebrating it with the usual somersault celebration. This sensational century also made him the Indian wicketkeeper-batter with the most hundreds in the format for the Baggy Blues. Pant and Gill put together 209 runs for the fourth wicket partnership.

India had ended Day 1 in command, with centuries from both Jaiswal and skipper, his fifth in Tests. Gill ended his innings after scoring 147 runs to his name and fell to Brydon Carse. For England, Stokes stood out with two wickets on Day 1, but the rest of the bowling attack failed to find consistency on a pitch that offered little assistance.
