The Day 2 of the fourth Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 posed more problems for India than solutions. The day began with Australia batting on a score of 311 runs with the loss of six wickets, with Steve Smith and Pat Cummins on the crease.

As the day progressed, Smith continued his resurgence and ended up scoring 140 runs in 197 deliveries. Furthermore, Pat Cummins added 49 runs to the board as Australia posted a total of 474 runs in the first innings of the game. As for team India, Jasprit Bumrah ended up being the highest wicket-taker in the first innings with four wickets to his name.

Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets, with Akash Deep striking twice and Washington Sundar taking one wicket as well. With a mammoth total on the board, the Indians came out to bat, looking to minimise the trail as much as possible before the day ended.

However, the visitors got off to a horrid start to the first innings as skipper Rohit Sharma continued his subpar form and departed on a score of three runs. With Rohit’s dismissal, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul continued their good run of form, but that too was cut short as Rahul was dismissed on a score of 24 runs through Pat Cummins’ brilliance with the ball.

Furthermore, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli tried to provide some hope for the Indian team. However, after a brilliant 82-run knock, the opener was dismissed through a run out due to miscommunication with Kohli. Towards the latter stages of the second day, the 36-year-old fell prey to Scott Boland as well, walking back to the pavilion on a score of 36 runs in 86 deliveries.

By the end of the second day, the tourists had posted a total of 164 runs and had lost five wickets in the process as well. The side trailed the Aussies by 310 runs and will hope that day 3 will bring about some change in Melbourne.
