After comprehensively beating New Zealand 3-0 in the ODIs, England started the five-match T20I series with a solid performance as they beat the White Ferns by 59 runs on Saturday, July 6.

Sophie Devine won the toss and opted to field first at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. The England opening duo of Maia Bouchier and Danielle Wyatt played some glorious shots and stitched a 61-run stand from 46 balls. After the former was dismissed for a 26-ball 32, Nat Sciver-Brunt came out to the middle and played a gem of an innings, amassing 47 runs off just 23 balls. She hit nine fours during her sparkling knock. Wyatt, who scored 76 off 51 balls, hitting 11 fours and one six, forged an 82-run partnership off 45 balls along with Sciver-Brunt.

Freya Kemp played a nice cameo of 27* off 17 balls as the home side finished on 197/3 in their 20 overs. Lea Tahuhu was the pick of the bowlers for the White Ferns, finishing with figures of 2/33 in four overs.

In reply, New Zealand lost Georgia Plimmer in the second over before Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr put on a 51-run stand, off just 40 balls. However, 63/1 in 8.3 overs, the tourists miraculously slumped to 67/6 as leg-spinner Sarah Glenn took three out of the five wickets.

After the mind-boggling collapse, Jess Kerr threw her bat around and scored 38 off 26 balls, forming a 43-run partnership alongside Brooke Halliday. Lea Tahuhu also hit a few boundaries as New Zealand avoided getting bowled out. They eventually finished on 138/9 in their 20 overs, falling short by 59 runs. Wyatt was adjudged Player of the Match for her stunning knock at the top. Now, the second T20I is scheduled to be held in Hove on Tuesday, July 09.
