Day 2 began with Zimbabwe resuming on a score of 363/4. Craig Ervine survived a close call in the very first over of the day, when an outside edge flew through the vacant first-slip position. Sean Williams slapped his way to a 150 in the subsequent over of the day. However, he perished shortly after.
Out came Brian Bennett. Zimbabwe went past the 400-mark in the 93rd over. The two of them adopted a dynamic batting style. Ervine brought up his fourth Test ton before nicking one through to the keeper Afsar Zazai in an over which produced another wicket. Bennett was one run short of his half-century as the teams ended a balanced first session.
The team 500 was brought up by a maximum by Newman Nyamhuri over the bowler’s head. However, Nyamhuri was dismissed in the very next over to leave Zimbabwe eight-down. At that point, it was not seeming as if Bennett would be able to get to his maiden international ton. Despite Blessing Muzarabani getting dismissed for a vital 19-run knock, Bennett continued on his own merry way to race to the coveted milestone.
Trevor Gwandu was the final Zimbabwean to be dismissed. The hosts ended up on their highest Test score of 586. AM Ghazanfar was impressive on his Test debut. The 18-year-old ended up with a three-wicket haul.
In reply, Zimbabwe struck early as Sediqullah Atal’s middle-stump was rattled away in the second over of the Afghanistan innings. From thereon, Afghanistan fought their way back. They brought up their 50 in the 13th over. After an incisive few overs, Muzarabani finally got the better of Abdul Malik. The day ended with Rahmat Shah ending on an unbeaten 49, with the final over of the day going for 10 runs.

Congrats to Brian Bennet for his 💯
Many argued that the decision by Justin to play him at number 7 instead of Jonathan Campbell was wrong. Others said he isn’t a test player. I will repeat Brian Bennet will be the adhesive that will keep many Zimbabwe innings together for long. pic.twitter.com/ZHoaPhofaK— Zolsky (@FrankMawoza1) December 27, 2024
