In the third match of the series on Sunday, Sri Lanka has clinched a 6-wicket victory over visiting Australia with nine balls to spare thanks to Pathum Nissanka’s superb innings at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After winning the match, the Lankans have gone ahead 2-1 in the 5-match ODI series.

After winning the toss, Aussie captain Aaron Finch decided to bat and sent Sri Lanka to bowl first. The Aussies have made three changes to their XI in this match. Steven Smith, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Swepson have been replaced by Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, and Jhye Richardson. On the other hand, the Sri Lankans have replaced Niroshan Dickwella with Danushka Gunathilaka.

Australia got off to a good start after coming down to bat. They lost 1 wicket in 10 overs of Power Play and scored 47 runs. Opener David Warner (9) returned to the dressing room early on, but Aussie captain Finch continued to lead the team from the front. However, Marsh could not play well after making a comeback from injury. The all-rounder was dismissed for just 10 off 23 balls.

After Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed for 29 runs, wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey came to the wicket. On the other hand, Finch returned to the pavilion after playing an innings of 62 runs from 85 balls with 4 fours and 1 six. After his departure, Carey and Travis Head put on a 72-run stand for the fifth wicket to bring the team back into the match.

Alex Carey missed a half-century for one run. He was dismissed for 49 off 52 balls. But Glenn Maxwell came on the wicket and started to play a stormy innings. 33 runs from 18 balls came from his bat. On the other end, Head was showing great batting skills as well. As a result, the visitors could score 98 runs in the last 10 overs.

In the end, Head’s unbeaten 70 run-innings helped the Aussies to get the fighting capital of 291 runs losing 6 wickets. Head made 70 off 65 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes. Cameron Green remained unbeaten on 15 off 12 balls. For Sri Lanka, Jeffrey Vandersay took the maximum number of 3 wickets with 49 runs in 10 overs. Besides, Dunith Wellalage, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Dushmantha Chameera took one wicket each.

Chasing a challenging target of 292 runs, Niroshan Dickwella and Pathum Nissanka put on a 42-run opening stand. Dickwella was dismissed scoring 25 off 26 balls. Then in the 2nd wicket, Nissanka and Kusal Mendis made a huge pair of 170 runs. This pair laid the foundation for the victory of the Lankans.

Smashing eight boundaries, Mendis left the field getting injured after scoring 87 off 85 balls. Dhananjaya de Silva came down to bat after that, who made 25 runs from 17 balls. Pathum Nissanka was dismissed whilst the team total was 284 runs. This is his first century in his ODI career. He played 147 balls and scored 137 runs. He also hit two sixes with 11 boundaries in his innings.

In the end, Sri Lanka lost just 4 wickets in 48.3 overs and reached the port of victory. Charith Asalanka (13) and Chamika Karunaratne (0) left the field remaining unbeaten. Jhye Richardson took the highest number of 2 wickets for the Aussies. Josh Hazlewood and Glenn Maxwell took one wicket each for their team.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at the same venue and at the same time in the fourth match of the 5-match ODI series.
